Thank you for this 🙏🏻🌙
I had no idea how much more complicated learning this is. As a Norse Pagan I really wanted to learn to write and speak Old Norse. I'm overwhelmed, but you do a great job at explaining this. Thank you.
Will check it out
Looks like a good channel for my kids to watch, and myself for more random education.
It's really cool. He has a high level of enthusiasm and a middle school English teacher vibe.
Nah, won't head to Word Safari right now!😡👎
Yay, will head to Word Safari right now! 😄👍
That ending
How come some American cowboy knows more about my ancestors language than me xd
In Kurdish We call Ãw.
This is going to help me with my old Norse thank you sir
A bit similar to the meaning of lord, hlafweard, loaf guardian/keeper.
Are you sur that the double consonant making the vocal invoiced is exclusive?
I speak a variation of my local Jædar (Jær) dialect and we do a lot of these in it too. Although the nn->tn is dn and tl is dl. We also do the dn occasionally when there is rn lik kyrnå->kydnå
,hoot!
I like that possible connection to "feeder". That's quite a satisfying theory. It's cool how people don't come out of the woodworks to tell you those sorts of similarities are meaningless when you have respected credentials. It makes me want to go out and get myself some of those. Formal education was always such fun but it never helped me pay the bills, as you know. 😢
With "father" and other PIE words that have not gone through a lot of change, can we see any similarities with other proto language families that could possibly link the families together?
Father, mother and brother are same in all IE languge
@@alixpowrt3456 What I mean is, can we take these words in PIE and see any kind of similarity in other proto languages, such as Proto-Uralic (just to pick one at random), to point to evidence of these language families being related under an even older language tree?
@@Sindraug25 if you want my opinon i dont think so I don't think there is anything called Indo-Uralic or other things like this.
I think of the verb "fæða" both meening to feed and to give birth.
@11:40 Arrested Development reference - nice.
Athair in both old and new Irish
How many folk wrote? People speak differently, names change depending on where one is, and how others pronounce them. No one in Mexico lisps, some Spanish speaking Europeans do. A king had a lisp, apparently.
Kyartan = Ciarán maybe?
INTP’s way of saying happy Father’s Day 😂
Is there any info on if there was a Gothic version of Wayland the smith? And what the Gothic cognates of the names were?
nice stash
Nice dodging the Sanskrit pronunciations In all seriousness, thank you for the father’s day short ❤
Father is Sanskrit is P-tru
Maybe the younger futhark was like our gen z now. Had a transition of lazy speaking
Icelandic is nearly Old Norse language...
Got 5 months.
I have seen one other video that covers this topic. I am interested in Bindrunes. I am creating my shield and would love to learn more about bindrunes so I can put them on my shield
wearg = hatler (a person who makes hats but is too similar to that one dude)
Thanks!
Definitely, buy a house if it can work for you! Thank you so much for all of the illumination of the historical sources and context you offer. Heck, you make me wonder if I shouldn’t have concentrated in old Norse subject matter. Thanks again! 5:53
I really enjoyed this one as I enjoyed the first one! I love how we get to see your personality and humor and you really seem to enjoy telling us these weird and awesome stories and I would really like for you to do more of these videos! It’s nice to get to know the real Jackson like this! ☺️
Excellent video. I know I'm late to the party, and that the professor touches the on the meaning in his video, but Týr's name is not *directly* cognate to Jupiter or Zeus. Instead, it comes from a different derivation of the same root. This derivation simply meant 'god'. Juppiter <- PIt. *Djous + *patēr <- PIE. *Dyḗws + *ph₂tḗr (*Sky-father) Zeús <- PGr. *Dzéus <- PIE. *Dyḗws (*Sky-god) Týr <- pGmc. *tīwaz <- PIE. *deywós (god) Týr's name is as generic as it comes, but it's possible that tīwaz served double duty, as *afaik* there's no reflexes of Dyḗws proper in Germanic.
Not sure what it takes for YT to count a view as a View, but even though it may not mean "watched till the very end", those 2 full views you were kinda expecting gotta be further removed from the 20,000+ currently counted views than proto-Basque from proto-PIE.
An article on visir.is on the festival in Iceland early in July: www.visir.is/g/20242584966d/brenna-landnamsbae-til-kaldra-kola-i-til-rauna-skyni
20:55 in Lithuanian, Sun is feminine (Saulė) and Moon is masculine (Mėnulis). Just an example
There's a great book series about Wayland The Smith called The Winter of The World (it's 6 books, the first 3 are about Wayland), in these stories his original name is Alv (Elf), then he renames himself Elof meaning The Smith/One Alone (Possible cognate of Aloof?) and then is given the title Valantor (Volundr) which is later shortened to Valant' (Volund -> Velent -> Wayland). I won't spoil anything else about the story but it's the best book series I've ever read, the first one is probably my favourite book of all time.
That longhouse event sounds like a fun time. Best of luck with the house. You've earned it.
'A Runer Runs Through It' starring Jackson Crawford
I hurried to get a ticket to the Oslo event, but it's already fully booked. ☹️
